How steps turn into calories

The calculator estimates your stride from your height (about 41% of it), multiplies it by your steps to get the distance, and uses your pace to get the time. Then calories = MET × weight in kg × hours, where MET is how hard a given walking pace is, taken from the Compendium of Physical Activities.

Weight matters most. The same 10,000 steps cost a 200 lb person about 50% more calories than a 130 lb person, because every step moves more body. Pace matters less: walking faster burns more per minute, but you also finish the steps sooner.

Why our number is lower than your step counter

Most online step calculators show gross calories: everything your body burned while you walked, including what it would have burned sitting on the couch. This one shows net calories, only what the walk added on top. That's the part that decides whether you lose weight, and it's about a quarter smaller: at 155 lb, 10,000 steps come out at about 285 net calories instead of 385 gross.

Walking is a good lever, but a slow one: 10,000 extra steps a day is roughly one chocolate bar. It works when you also eat at your daily calorie target. Find yours here: Daily Calorie Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?

For a 155 lb person of average height walking at an ordinary pace, 10,000 steps add about 250-300 calories on top of what the body burns at rest. Gross figures, which include resting metabolism, come out around 350-450.

How many steps does it take to burn 100 calories?

About 3,500 steps for a 155 lb person at an ordinary pace, counting only the calories the walk adds. The lighter you are, the more it takes: around 5,000 at 120 lb, closer to 2,700 at 200 lb.

Does walking faster burn more calories per step?

A little. Brisk walking burns a lot more per minute but only somewhat more per step, because you cover the same steps in less time.

Can I walk off a meal?

Only a small one. A slice of pizza takes about 9,000-11,000 steps for an average adult. Walking adds to a calorie deficit, but for most people skipping 300 calories is far easier than walking them off.

Formulas and scientific references Stride estimated as 41.4% of height, steps converted to distance and time at the chosen pace, then calories = MET x body weight in kg x hours, with MET values for level walking from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities. The headline figure is net: (MET - 1), so resting metabolism is not counted as burned by the walk.
