Four ingredients, no oil, no butter: oats, raisins, honey and chocolate whey. Fifteen minutes in the air fryer and each bar comes out at 237 calories and 2g of fat. Store-bought oat bars usually run 6-12g of fat, because the dough is held together with oil or nut butter.

Here the binder is raisin paste. Soak the raisins for three minutes, blend them into a paste, and it glues the oats together as well as butter would. Two rules: the mixture has to be very thick, and you have to pack it into the mold hard, otherwise the bars crumble. Cut them only after the fridge, while warm they are still soft.

Each bar is 237 calories, 9.5g protein, 48g carbs and 4g fiber. Honestly, this is a carb bar with a protein bump, so it works best before a workout or on the road, in place of the pastry you would buy otherwise. I keep them in the fridge and grab one on the way out. If you want more protein per calorie, the peanut butter protein energy balls or overnight protein oats do that job. Ingredients

  • Rolled oats - 120g (1 1/3 cups)
  • Raisins - 75g (1/2 cup)
  • Honey - 60g (3 tbsp)
  • Chocolate whey protein - 25g (1 scoop)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Soak the raisins

Cover with boiling water for 3 minutes, drain and pat dry.

  2. Step 2: Blend into a paste

Use a blender, or chop them fine with a knife. This paste is what holds the bars together.

  3. Step 3: Mix everything

Oats, raisin paste, honey and whey. The mixture should be very thick, a spoon barely turns in it.

  4. Step 4: Pack the mold

Press hard, a 3/4 inch (1.5-2 cm) layer. How firm the bars end up depends on this step.

  5. Step 5: Air fry

285°F (140°C) for 15 minutes. Edges turn golden and the top is dry to the touch.

  6. Step 6: Cool, then chill

Cool completely in the mold, then 1 hour in the fridge to set. Keep them in the fridge.
